Why SMEs Need to Learn Some DIY Business Skills

Dear Friend,

If I may ask,

What extra business skills have you learnt recently that will reposition your business for more and better profits?

Let me share a personal story with you

I have always been a core litigation lawyer (what people in Nigeria refer to as “Barr-is-ter” – (God knows I hate to be addressed with that name)

And I can say that my litigation experience is one of the bedrock of my progress in the legal industry.

However, as I grew older in the practice of law, I discovered that there are better, quicker & timely ways of resolving disputes especially when it has to do with business.

✔️ You know what they say? “Time is money” Right?!

This informed my Mediation training and fast forward to today, I am an Attorney-Mediator with the Lagos State Multi-door Courthouse (LMDC) and Mediation Advocate with the Standing Conference of Mediation Advocate (SCMA), UK.

My new skills acquisition has enable me address clients’ legal issues in a more proactive and productive manner, and of course that means more referrals and good remuneration for my additional expertise!

However, all this didn’t happen overnight, it took me time, dedication and training to be able to do what I am doing right now and earn from it.

The truth is, if you have not learnt any new Skills to improve your business since last year, till now, then you are not making meaningful progress in your personal development, which will in turn affect your business negatively or otherwise!

As a business person, you must at intervals, improve yourself, invest in acquiring new & more knowledge, take Training and real coaching classes which will reposition your Business for more profits.

I keep saying it, you cannot call experts for everything.

Experts are needed for complex and difficult issues, but the question you should ask yourself is, before you engage the services of an expert, what steps have you been able to take to resolve an issue?

Or what steps do you intend to take when issues arise in your business (because they always will)

Let me break that further, what structures have you put in place to help you avoid debt issues and reduce your credit risk to the barest minimum, especially as a small, medium business owner.

How do you intend to build a debt-free business so that your business can thrive beyond an average business in your industry?

This is worth thinking about.
